Example with the starting values

  • Total investment: ₹10,00,000
  • Withdrawal per month: ₹10,000
  • Expected return rate (p.a.): 8%
  • Time period: 5 years

Result:

  • Invested amount: ₹10,00,000
  • Total withdrawal: ₹6,00,000
  • Final value: ₹7,55,077

How it is calculated

A systematic withdrawal plan (SWP) takes a fixed amount out of an investment every month, while the rest stays invested. If the growth is more than what you take out, the money lasts longer.

How it is worked out: each month the balance grows at the yearly rate ÷ 12, then the withdrawal is taken out. When the balance reaches zero, withdrawals stop.

Example: ₹10 lakh, ₹10,000 a month, an assumed 8% a year: after 5 years you have taken out ₹6 lakh and about ₹7.5 lakh is still left. Real returns vary, so the money can run out sooner.
